The Watched Fall of Sparrows is a record of the Banning family as told by their cousin, Marley. Her concentrated narrative spans ninety years, two wars, and several states, recalling the homes they made under trees and next to rivers for themselves and their chosen kin. Their tenderness is tenacious as it navigates the unexpected turns of distance, death, and disease; but Marley also keeps a compassionate eye on the ways they went weak or couldn't cope, bearing honest witness to the weight of what they bore. When their flickering flames begin to dim, she takes what she has of their light and camps beside it, writing down all that she can. From her eventual vantage point beside the Pacific Ocean, Marley sorts the scenes she cannot shake and the spirits she tried to save.

Great read... not your typical fare that is interspersed with filler to make a longer story. E. Sharp forces you to chew on each word and weigh every statement before turning to the next page; even then, you're still not sure you've quite grasped the content. The ending comes all too soon in a story that you wish for more of, yet this book, amazingly heavy in its brevity, took longer to read than many a weighty tome. She speaks powerfully with much insight on the human condition and ends this saga with rich, bold, thought-provoking statements.Product details

Compelling story with much insight and honesty. The reader experiences this family's relationships and losses through the several generations. The reader is allowed to learn and discover details as the story unfolds. The story is told simply and directly. Not a lot of time is spent drawing out a single moment for all its emotional detail. Instead the characters' actions gradually reveal all that those moments meant to them and how they will shape the rest of their lives.
I'm not a novel lover by nature. Novels are the "something"-filled donuts of life--is it angel cream, lemon goo, coconut pudding, strawberry jam, or chocolate filling in there? I prefer frosted donuts, so I know at a glance what I'm biting into. That's why I like non-fiction. I like to have a table of contents and a thesis in the first few pages, that lets me know where the book is going to take me and what it's going to tell me. Novels don't give me this. Novels are unpredictable. I never know what I'm stepping into--or how I'll feel when I emerge from the storyline. Blessed or betrayed? Will I feel like I have just wasted hours of my life I'll never get back, or that I have gained something that I will never lose?
The Watched Fall of Sparrows leaves me feeling blessed. It isn't a "they all lived happily ever after" book...but I still find it to be heart-warming, enriching, and beautiful. It isn't a predictable storyline, but all the twists and turns are told by a narrator I can't help but trust. It's a short book and a fast read, but one I can't help but re-reading. (I have heard this same comment from others who I have shared the book with.)
So, if you share my aversion to novels, I'd recommend this book to you! (Novel lovers, you'll probably love it too...but that goes without saying.)
I loved this book like i have loved some pieces of music-you can taste their goodness. It has brought my dear one dearer to my heart.
Beautifully written, character driven story. A MUST READ
I wasn't sure what I was going to think when I picked this up - my mom had actually bought it - but I absolutely loved it. Reading this book is like coming home, even with the first read. You are welcomed into a family you instantly grow to care about and want to join - not because they lead charmed lives in a fantasy world you want to escape to but because they deal with real world pains and growths and tragedies in authentic and relatable ways. Their emotions, relationships, and hardships ring true in a way that is at once uplifting and thought provoking. It's a quick read - it amazed me how quickly I was invested in the characters and story. To me, the mark of a good writer there. I'm very interested to see what comes next from this author! Highly, highly recommend you give this book a try. You won't regret it.
